Introduction

Pets are irreplaceable members of our family. They make us laugh every day, heal us, and sometimes they get upset, but we can't hate them... they are such irreplaceable beings, aren't they?

However, pets cannot live for 80 or 90 years like us humans. We only have a limited amount of time to spend happy and enjoyable time with them. So, as pet parents, what we can do for them and what we hope for is for them to have fun every day, be healthy, and live one more day longer, right?
Understand the ecological aspects of your pet's body, feed them a diet that suits their body's needs, and support their immunity. And avoid things that are harmful to their body. This will enhance their body's natural healing ability.
Natural Therapy for Animals offers consulting to help pets live longer and happier lives through a holistic approach using natural alternatives, primarily food therapy and essential oils.

About Food Therapy

What is the "right diet" for pets?

Dogs and cats have different physical characteristics from humans. In particular, the structure and function of the digestive organs related to eating are different, so if you do not feed them a high-quality diet that is suitable for each species, it can cause various diseases in the future.

Cats are true carnivores, just like lions, and are suited to a meat (protein)-based diet.

Dogs are said to have genetic ancestors in wolves, and considering the body's digestive function, a meat-based diet is optimal for both dogs and wolves.

So, is a dog food or cat food that is labeled as a "completely balanced complete nutritional diet" and contains a lot of carbohydrates the best diet for dogs and cats? ... The answer is clearly no.

There is also no "perfect diet for all dogs and cats." There are several things to consider for each individual pet before feeding them, especially when they are puppies or seniors, before and after pregnancy, their individual constitutions, if they have certain diseases, or if they are allergic to certain ingredients. In addition, pets cannot tell their owners which foods are suitable for them, or which foods will put a strain on their body given their current health condition.

At Food Therapy, we can suggest dietary recommendations based on the guidelines of the NRC (The National Research Council) that are tailored to the needs and condition of each individual pet.

What is Aromatherapy

Plants such as grasses, trees, seeds, flowers, and fruits have a great effect on our minds and bodies.

It is a natural therapy with few side effects that uses essential oils extracted from plants to avoid and prevent problems, improve the body's natural healing power, and return it to a normal state (homeostasis).

Natural and safe products can be used safely not only on people but also on animals. (As with humans, there are oils that need to be avoided depending on the condition of some animals or illnesses.)

Natural compounds such as essential oils are not highly toxic, so they are attracting a lot of attention as a way to help with various physical and bodily discomforts.

In addition, many holistic veterinarians are sounding the alarm and recommending alternative therapies in recent years, especially overseas, as many pets have become ill and suffered or died due to vaccines and preventive drugs.

Aromatherapy using essential oils is one of the alternative therapies.

Animals have the natural ability to heal themselves, which is called [Zoopharmacology]. Animal pharmacology is the act of self-medication, using animals' innate ability to select what they need to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of pathogens, toxins, and even other animals. Extracts offered include a variety of essential oils, absolutes, plant extracts, and algae.

My aromatherapy sessions build on this foundation of animal pharmacology, using essential oils to support pets' natural healing abilities.

Why do I use essential oils for pets?

Here are the main reasons I use essential oils, among other natural remedies:

1. You can use them in 3 ways, aromatically, topically or internally, depending on the issue.

2. They have many benefits, and essential oils alone can help animals with many things. In addition, they can be used to complement western medicine treatments.

3. They are convenient to carry anywhere and can be used for emergencies.

4. They can be used by the whole family, not just pets!

Living things have their own healing powers, which work together to bring the body to a normal state (homeostasis). Essential oils help the body to achieve this.

And, one oil can have multiple properties! For animals with multiple ailments, one oil can do the work of many, helping to support the function of other problematic systems.

For example, frankincense, also known as the king of oils, has a variety of benefits. It not only has the power to activate cells and relieve inflammation and pain, but it is also effective for feeling melancholy, distressed and feeling unwell.

Balance, dōTERRA's grounding blend, has a calming effect on stressed and anxious pets. By using Balance either topically or diffused, it not only calms the pet, but the owner too. This also helps the pet, having a calm owner.

Essential oils have few, if any, side effects. If there is a reaction, which is rare, then it is easily resolved either by getting fresh air or applying more carrier oil. Any symptoms usually disappear within 24hrs.

Have you ever heard these statements from a vet when your pet looks unwell, " there's nothing wrong with your pet", "let's see how things go", "there's nothing we can do", "they need these drugs for life"?? Vets deal with symptoms, not always causes.

With natural therapy you can not only support and deal with such conditions, using natural products that helps get to the root of the problem and not just mask the symptoms, you can also use natural therapy to prevent conditions in the first place.

Would you like to be able to take care of your pets daily life with essential oils and help them be the healthiest and happiest they can be?

Certified Animal Aromatherapist by Dr. Janet Roark& Canine Nutritionist by CASI

In 2016, I moved to Nhulunbuy (Arnhem land NT). Two months later I got Chloe a six week old female Staffordshire bull terrier, after that, Chloe faced a series of problems, including itching, red rash, an anterior cruciate ligament injury, digestive issues, and emotional issues.

I started by helping Chloe's symptoms, such as itching and red rashes, with fresh foods. The reason why I focused on fresh food (raw diet) instead of dog food is because of what I learned from my mother and a Chinese medicine doctor while growing up in Japan. "医食同源 Isyoku dougen" is a Chinese proverb that means "A balanced diet leads to a healthy body." This idea has been prevalent in Japan for a long time. Although itching and red rashes are symptoms that appear on the surface of the body, I was able to improve her discomfort by addressing the root cause from within her body.

In 2018, we got a male Staffordshire bull terrier, Olympus aka Oly at 11 weeks old. Oly was already infected with demodectic mange.

I have been surrounded by dogs since I was born, and my father was a breeder of Collie and Sheltie for over 15 years, and his dogs all ended their lives without any serious illnesses, so I was confused when Chloe and OIy had these health problems.

And when I was looking for a natural remedy, I came across essential oils and he got better in one month! Since then, I have used essential oils to address health issues not only for my dog, but also for many other dogs in town.

In 2020, when I moved to Cairns with my family and wanted to learn more about essential oils in earnest, Dr. Roark, an integrative medicine veterinarian who is known as Essential Oil Vet living in the United States, established a course to train her specialist in animal aromatherapy. I decided to learn about it and take the course. I've learned not only essential oils, but also food therapy, shiatsu/massage, Chinese medicines, and other natural remedies, and I was qualified as aromatherapy specialist. Currently, I am consulting face-to-face and video chat with many people who lives not only in Australia, but also in the United States, Europe, and Japan. In addition, I am also a part of the Essential Oil Vet Network of Certified animal aromatherapy consultants. Once a week we, Dr Janet Roark (veterinarian) and other certified consultants, meet to discuss cases and share knowledge and ideas. I am able to get advice from the essential oil vet herself to help support your pet.

I was also certified as a canine nutritionist by CASI (COMPANION ANIMAL SCIENCES INSTITUTE) in 2024.

⁂Dr. Roark (DVM) is an integrative medicine veterinarian in Texas, USA and a member of doTERRA's Advisory Board. She not only treats dogs and cats, but also other animals such as horses, cows, sheep, and birds using essential oils, herbs, acupuncture, lasers, etc., as well as Western medicine. She has also published several books, including Essential Oils for Pets Guidebook.

Natural Therapy and Pets

While some pets may enjoy going to the vet, most find the experience of getting on the examination table stressful. In this therapy, after the session, the owner will follow my guidance to deal with their pet issues at home. This reduces stress for the pet and also strengthens the bond between the pet and the owner.
